Mark Teixeira did not re-tear his wrist, which is good news for the Yankees. He is still out indefinitely, though.
ANAHEIM – Well, it could have been worse.
Mark Teixeira reinjured his right wrist Saturday in a loss to the Angels, but there was no re-tear, according to Yankees manager Joe Girardi.
Teixeira, who flew back to New York during the game, was examined by Dr. Chris Ahmad on Sunday and took an MRI exam. The diagnosis was inflammation and the first baseman was treated with a cortisone shot. Teixeira is still out indefinitely and there is no timetable for his return.
“It’s a good thing,” Girardi said. “If it was a re-tear, he’d be out for the rest of the season. Inflammation was the best-case scenario we could have got.”
Lyle Overbay will play first base in the meantime. Girardi said he would not consider using the switch-hitting Teixeira strictly from the right side of the plate, where he doesn’t feel as much pain.
“Inflammation should go away,” Girardi said. “He’s not a player for a couple of day.”
In 15 games since returning from the disabled list, Teixeira is hitting .151 (8-for-53) with three homers and 12 RBIs. Hitting coach Kevin Long said Saturday he wasn’t sure if the slugger “has been right” since coming back.
Teixeira left Saturday’s game in the fourth inning. He now joins Kevin Youkilis and Curtis Granderson as players who were injured and got hurt again after returning from the DL.
