Yankees’ Youkilis ‘back’ on DL

ANAHEIM, Calif. — The Yankees placed Kevin Youkilis on the 15-day disabled list with a lumbar strain Friday afternoon, after the infielder awoke with numbness in his legs. It’s the same injury which caused the veteran to miss almost the entire month of May.

“You always worry when you have no feeling,” Youkilis, who has scheduled a visit with Dr. Robert Watkins, said before Friday night’s game with the Angels. “You think about it all day. The next thing you know it’s an epidural.”

Youkilis, acquired in the offseason to fill in for Alex Rodriguez at third base, has struggled since being idled from April 28-May 31. In 11 games since his return, he has just five hits in 37 at-bats and went 0 for 7 in Thursday’s 18-inning loss in Oakland.

For the season, Youkilis is batting just .219 with two homers and eight RBIs in just 28 games.

With Youkilis on the DL and relief pitching at a premium after Thursday’s extra-inning marathon, the Yankees called up right-handed pitcher Chris Bootcheck and outfielder Thomas Neal from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. To make room on the roster, the team shifted infielder Eduardo Nunez (rib cage) to the 60-day DL and sent down pitcher Adam Warren.
