Wang opts out of Yankees’ contract, will start for Blue Jays

SEATTLE — Chien-Ming Wang will be starting for an American League East team this year, but it won’t be the Yankees.

Wang was excercised his opt-out clause, so he can sign with the Blue Jays, who he will start for on Tuesday against the White Sox. Since Wang declined an opportunity to opt out at the end of May, the Yankees had the option to keep him on their Triple-A roster but decided to give their former ace a chance to take advantage of a big-league opportunity elsewhere.

“He was great,” Wang’s agent Alan Nero said of Yankees GM Brian Cashman.

“He didn’t see an opportunity in the next couple of weeks. He did what you hoped somebody would do … He’s a class act.”

Wang was 4-4 with a 2.33 ERA in nine starts for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre, but was behind Vidal Nuno, Ivan Nova and perhaps Adam Warren for a chance to rejoin the Yankees as a starter.
